The third room in the loop. The party rests in Fantasy Tavern, kits out here, and walks into Fantasy Dungeon.

Fantasy Dungeon argued that a dungeon is a set of states. A forge is the same argument on a different axis: everything here is either HOT or COLD, and the difference between the two is the entire trade. Cold iron is grey and hard. Hot iron is orange and moves. A pack that ships one temperature ships half a smithy.

Two hammers, and they are not the same sound

This is where the pack really departs. Striking hot iron is a dull thud — the metal absorbs the blow and moves. Striking the bare anvil face is a bright ring that carries down the street. A real smith alternates them, tapping the anvil between working blows to keep rhythm and let the hammer rebound, and that two-tone pattern is what a forge actually sounds like from outside.

Every pack that ships one generic hammer hit gets this wrong, and a game that loops it sounds like a construction site. Both are here: hammer_hot and anvil_tap. Alternate them.

Temperature pairs, drawn twice

  • forge_cold and forge_hot — grey ash in the hearth, and coals through it
  • ingot_cold and ingot_hot — the same bar, grey at the ends where it lost heat
  • blade_blank and blade_finished — no edge and no hilt, then ground and wrapped
  • gear_broken_pile — what walks in the door, because broken is what pays the bill

What is inside

  • 53 icons — fire (forge, bellows, coal, tongs, slack tub, rake, flint), metal (ingots, blanks, horseshoe, nails, mail, scrap), tools (anvil, two hammers, whetstone, file, hot chisel, leg vise, rack), wares (blades, axe head, helm, shield blank, arrowheads, iron pot, hinges), shop (counter, coin box, order slate, apron), and UI including a working-heat gauge
  • 20 tiles — sooted flagstone, cinder, plank and gravel; firebrick, soot, timber and shutter walls; a two-tile hearth, anvil on its stump, weapon rack and quench trough. Every one tiles seamlessly.
  • 32 sounds — both hammers, the sledge, bellows, fire roar, quench hiss, steam, file, whetstone, hot chisel, vise, coin count, a three-second anvil ring, and four seconds of smithy room tone

PNG at 16 / 32 / 48 / 96 px with transparency, a 32px spritesheet with a JSON atlas, and WAV sound effects.

  • RPG Maker MZ / MV — the 48px icons match the default icon grid
  • Tiled — 32px tiles, no margin, no spacing; the JSON atlas names every frame
